15and why I think it's important for us to change up our surroundings every once in a while.
16But before we talk about all of the changes I've gone through,但是在我们谈论我经历的所有变化之前
17I think it's important for me to paint you a little picture of what my hometown is like我觉得画一张我家乡的画对我很重要
18and where I come from so that you can really understand how much I've changed.
19I grew up in a small town in the Midwest region of the United States.
20I was born and raised there.
21I spent most of my life there.

23Not a lot of people to meet.
24My days were really repetitive.
25But now as I look back on it, I've realized that it was actually a really peaceful and chill place to grow up.
26There wasn't a lot to do.
27And actually one of the things that we did for fun was once we learned how to drive,
28we would go with our friends, just get in the car, listen to music, talk, and drive around town.
29There was really no destination.
30We had nowhere to go because there was nothing to do.
31We would just get in the car and drive.
32And now I'm in Beijing, China, which is one of the biggest cities in the world.
33It's massive.
34So as you can imagine, my life is really different now.
35I think the first major change that I've noticed in myself is that I've become much more spontaneous.
36Before coming here, I never really thought of myself as spontaneous
37because I was never really the type of person to just randomly go on a trip or, you know,因为我从来就不是那种随便旅行的人
38that day I would just decide to go to a new city or decide to try something new.
39But now that I'm here in China, I feel like I do that all the time.
40And I think one major reason for this is that transportation is so convenient and so easy here.
41There are so many different choices.
42I mean, you can call a taxi and it'll show up really quickly
43and you can just, you know, get in a car, go to wherever you want to go if it's not too far.
44Or you can take the subway, you can take the train, there's the high-speed train.
45All of these things just make it really easy to travel in China.
46I can literally just go somewhere new inside of Beijing or I can go to another city,
47another province even, just explore for a day or two, maybe for the weekend,
48you know, try some new food, see some new sights, and then just come back home a day later.
49It's really not to say that in America there's nowhere to go, there's nothing to see,并不是说在美国,没有地方可以去,没有地方可以看
50because there is.
51There are a lot of amazing national parks, there are a lot of cool cities
52to go to, but it's really inconvenient to get there.
53And this brings me to another change
54that I've noticed in myself, which is that my perception of time and distance has totally
55changed.
56Where I grew up, traveling an hour by car was totally normal.
57It wasn't even considered
58a long trip at all.
59Actually, that was kind of a short trip for us.
60But now that I'm here,但现在我来了
61I do feel like if you were to tell me a place is an hour by subway, I might feel like it's a bit
62far or that's kind of long to be on the subway.
63And it also depends if you're simply just talking
64about taking one line on the subway, like getting on, going all the way to your destination,
65and getting off.
66I feel like that's totally fine, that's totally doable.
67But if it's an hour where但如果是一小时
68you have to change lines like three times, and then you have to walk 20 minutes after the subway,
69then I might kind of reconsider going to that location, because that feels a lot longer than然后我可能会重新考虑 去那个地点, 因为感觉比
70just sitting on one line for an hour.
71And then if you were to tell me that I needed to travel three然后如果你告诉我 我需要旅行三
72hours on the high-speed train, I would feel like that's a really short amount of time.
73I would我会
74I think that most of this is because where I'm from, we don't have public transportation.
76we don't even have a bus system.
77There's no public transportation at all.
78So it's kind of a newer
79thing for me.
80I took the subway when I was in Boston for grad school.
81But now in China, there但现在在中国,那里
82are just so many more options.
83Every mode of transportation here feels different.
84And that's这是
85changed how I feel about time and distance.
86Another change that I've noticed that is maybe
87not so much of a good thing is that I think I've become a little less patient.
88One of the things
89that I think a lot of people immediately realize upon coming into China is that it's really
90convenient to do a lot of different things here.
91I mean, you can have food and drinks delivered right我的意思是,你可以有食物和饮料 交货的权利
92to your door in 20 minutes.20
93Or if you want to go somewhere, you can call a taxi and it'll pick you或者,如果你想去什么地方, 你可以叫出租车,它会选你
94up really fast, get you to your destination really fast.
95Or if you go out of your apartment complex,

97you to walk around.
98There's a lot of things like right at your feet.
99But the problem, I think at但问题是,我想
100for myself, is that it's really easy to get used to this convenience.
101For example, with the food
102and drinks, like I said, you can usually order just about anything and have it by your door within like喝,就像我说的, 你通常可以点任何东西 并把它在你的门内一样
10320 minutes maybe.
104But there was one time I ordered some food and it was about 15 minutes late.
106because of that, I was like sitting there worrying like, why is it taking so long?
107Where is my food?
108I really don't think that being 15 minutes late on that kind of thing is a big deal.
109But just in the但就在那个
110moment, I started to get really stressed and really anxious.
111So I feel like I've started to become a所以我觉得自己开始成为一个
112bit less patient.
113And another change that I've noticed is how I feel about people.

116But what I mean is just I feel like I'm more used to seeing people但是我的意思是,我只是感觉 我更习惯于看人
117everywhere I go.
118I think a lot of people who have never been to China might have this kind of我想很多从来没有去过中国的人 可能会有这样的
119stereotype where, you know, no matter where you go, there's going to be crowds of people.
121barely walk and, you know, everybody's just like really crammed together.
122But that's not really true.
123If you go to some kind of tourist spot, or if you're on the subway during rush hour, yeah,
124you might, you know, kind of meet those huge crowds.
125You might run into a lot of people in你可能会遇到很多人

136where you can be, you know, surrounded by nature.
137And it's really nice.

141or there's just a few people walking by.
142I think there actually is a positive side to large crowds
143of people.人类。
144Because in a large crowd, nobody has the time or the energy to pay attention to every
145person.个人。
146So it's really easy to go undercover.
147You know, nobody really cares if your hair is a little你知道,没有人真的在乎 你的头发是不是有点
148messy, maybe your clothes don't match really well, or you're just like not looking your best that day.

171And there are so many like local foods, depending on which province
172you go to.
173So I really don't want to be making the same five foods that I've been making my whole life所以,我真的不想做 同样的五种食物,我一直做 我的整个生活
174when I'm in a place that has so much to offer.
175Where I'm from, we don't even have delivery food.

178And there's not enough people there that would be able to support this kind of没有足够的人可以支持这种

181really rely on delivery food that much.
182But now that I'm here, it's a totally different story.
183I feel like I'm always thinking of the next thing to try, the next dish, the next drink,
184the next coffee.

187had this kind of opportunity or this kind of experience when I was growing up.
188Or even in甚至连在
189You can get delivery food in America, in bigger cities.

193something up on the order anyway, or it takes like an hour to get to your door.

10Some of these changes are pretty small, like what I do in my free time有些变化很小 就像我在空闲时间做的那样
11or maybe what I eat every day.
12But there are also some pretty big changes, like how I perceive time但也有一些很大的变化,比如我对时间的看法
13and what I think about life.
14So I want to kind of share some of these with you guys.
15And then towards the end, we're gonna talk about到最后,我们再谈
16how our environment actually changes who we are我们的环境会怎样改变?
17and why I think it's important for us to change up our surroundings every once in a while.
18But before we talk about all of the changes I've gone through,但是在我们谈论我经历的所有变化之前
19I think it's important for me to paint you a little picture of what my hometown is like我觉得画一张我家乡的画对我很重要
20and where I come from so that you can really understand how much I've changed.
21I grew up in a small town in the Midwest region of the United States.
22I was born and raised there.
23I spent most of my life there.
24And growing up, I always thought it was really boring and there wasn't much to do,长大以后,我一直觉得很无聊,没什么可做的
25not a lot of people to meet, my days were really repetitive.
26But now as I look back on it, I've realized that it was actually a really peaceful and chill place to grow up.
27There wasn't a lot to do and actually one of the things that we did for fun
28was once we learned how to drive, we would go with our friends,
29just get in the car, listen to music, talk and drive around town.
30There was really no destination.
31We had nowhere to go because there was nothing to do.
32We would just get in the car and drive.
33And now I'm in Beijing, China, which is one of the biggest cities in the world.
34It's massive.
35So as you can imagine, my life is really different now.
36I think the first major change that I've noticed in myself is that I've become much more spontaneous.
37Before coming here, I never really thought of myself as spontaneous
38because I was never really the type of person to just randomly go on a trip
39or, you know, that day I would just decide to go to a new city or decide to try something new.
40But now that I'm here in China, I feel like I do that all the time.
41And I think one major reason for this is that transportation is so convenient and so easy here.
42There are so many different choices.
43I mean, you can call a taxi and it'll show up really quickly.
44And you can just, you know, get in a car, go to wherever you want to go if it's not too far.
45Or you can take the subway, you can take the train, there's the high-speed train.
46All of these things just make it really easy to travel in China.
47I can literally just go somewhere new inside of Beijing
48or I can go to another city, another province even, just explore for a day or two, maybe for the weekend.
49You know, try some new food, see some new sights, and then just come back home a day later.
50It's really not to say that in America there's nowhere to go, there's nothing to see,并不是说在美国,没有地方可以去,没有地方可以看
51because there is.
52There are a lot of amazing national parks, there are a lot of cool cities to go to,有很多令人惊奇的国家公园, 有很多很酷的城市去,
53but it's really inconvenient to get there.
54And this brings me to another change that I've noticed in myself,
55which is that my perception of time and distance has totally changed.
56Where I grew up, traveling an hour by car was totally normal.
57It wasn't even considered a long trip at all.
58Actually, that was kind of a short trip for us.
59But now that I'm here, I do feel like if you were to tell me a place is an hour by subway,
60I might feel like it's a bit far or that's kind of long to be on the subway.
61And it also depends.
62If you're simply just talking about taking one line on the subway,
63like getting on, going all the way to your destination and getting off,就像继续前进,一路走到你的目的地 然后下车,
64I feel like that's totally fine, that's totally doable.
65But if it's an hour where you have to change lines like three times,
66and then you have to walk 20 minutes after the subway,
67then I might kind of reconsider going to that location,
68because that feels a lot longer than just sitting on one line for an hour.
69And then if you were to tell me that I needed to travel three hours on the high-speed train,
70I would feel like that's a really short amount of time.
71I would feel like that's super close.
72Like, that's so easy.
73I would do that no problem.
74I think that most of this is because where I'm from, we don't have public transportation.
75Like, we don't even have a bus system.
76There's no public transportation at all.
77So it's kind of a newer thing for me.
78I took the subway when I was in Boston for grad school,
79but now in China, there are just so many more options.
80Every mode of transportation here feels different,
81and that's kind of changed how I feel about time and distance.
82Another change that I've noticed that is maybe not so much of a good thing
83is that I think I've become a little less patient.
84One of the things that I think a lot of people immediately realize upon coming into China
85is that it's really convenient to do a lot of different things here.
86I mean, you can have food and drinks delivered right up to your door in 20 minutes.
87Or if you want to go somewhere, you can call a taxi and it'll pick you up really fast,
88get you to your destination really fast.
89Or if you go out of your apartment complex, your hotel,
90there's usually a lot of restaurants, there's a supermarket,
91there's maybe a mall for you to walk around.
92There's a lot of things, like, right at your feet.
93But the problem, I think, at least for myself,
94is that it's really easy to get used to this convenience.
95For example, with the food and drinks, like I said,比如说,食物和饮料,就像我说的,
96you can usually order just about anything and have it by your door within, like, 20 minutes, maybe.
97But there was one time I ordered some food and it was about 15 minutes late.
98And because of that, I was, like, sitting there worrying, like,正因为如此,我坐在那里担心
99why is it taking so long?
100Where is my food?
101I'm starving.
102I really don't think that being 15 minutes late on that kind of thing is a big deal.
103But just in the moment, I started to get really stressed and really anxious.
104So I feel like I've started to become a bit less patient.
105And another change that I've noticed is how I feel about people.
106And I know that sounds kind of strange, but我知道这听起来有点奇怪,但是...
107what I mean is just, I feel like I'm more used to seeing people everywhere I go.
108I think a lot of people who have never been to China might have this kind of stereotype where,我认为,很多从未去过中国的人 可能会有这种陈规定型的地方,
109you know, no matter where you go, there's going to be crowds of people,你知道,不管你去哪里, 会有人群,
110you can barely walk, and, you know, everybody's just, like, really crammed together.
111But that's not really true.
112If you go to some kind of tourist spot or if you're on the subway during rush hour,
113yeah, you might, you know, kind of meet those huge crowds.
114You might run into a lot of people in those situations and that's totally expected.
115The first time that happened to me, it was really intimidating.
116It was kind of overwhelming.
117But I feel like I've gotten a bit more used to huge crowds of people.
118And, of course, there are many places you can go where there's not that many people at all.
119Especially in Beijing, I've noticed there are so many parks.
120There are so many places where you can be, you know, surrounded by nature.
121And it's really nice.
122It's nice to kind of have a balance.
123You can go and see a bunch of people or you can go find a place where you're totally alone
124or there's just a few people walking by.
125I think there actually is a positive side to large crowds of people我认为,实际上有积极的一面 对大量人群
126because in a large crowd, nobody has the time or the energy to pay attention to every single person.
127So it's really easy to go undercover.
128You know, nobody really cares if your hair is a little messy.
129Maybe your clothes don't match really well or you're just like not looking your best that day.
130Nobody is really going to look at you.
131Nobody's going to pay attention to you.
132Nobody's going to judge as long as you're not like disrupting other people.
133Nobody cares.
134So you can kind of go anonymous.
135You can kind of like blend in with everyone else.
136It's actually a really nice feeling.
137And lastly, the change that I think is maybe the most predictable is that I've basically stopped cooking altogether.
138Which to be fair, I never really did a lot of cooking in America.
139I really don't like to cook and I'm not really good at it.
140And I really just hate having to come up with all of these different ideas of what to cook for dinner.
141Like that is really annoying and I really didn't like that when I was in America.
142There are so many different foods in China.
143I feel like there are so many things that I want to try and there are so many like local foods depending on which province you go to.
144So I really don't want to be making the same five foods that I've been making my whole life.
145When I'm in a place that has so much to offer.
146Where I'm from, we don't even have delivery food.
147Like we don't even have that kind of service because there aren't even restaurants where I'm from.
148Like not really.
149And there's not enough people there that would be able to support this kind of business or this kind of system.
150So I always thought that once I came to China, I wouldn't really rely on delivery food that much.
151But now that I'm here, it's a totally different story.
152I feel like I'm always thinking of the next thing to try.
153Next dish, the next drink, the next coffee.
154So I think this is honestly a really big change for myself.
155I've never had this kind of opportunity or this kind of experience when I was growing up or even in Boston.
156You can get delivery food in America in bigger cities.
157But whenever I ordered something there, it was always really expensive.
158Like totally overpriced.
159And most of the time they mess something up on the order anyway.
160Or it takes like an hour to get to your door.
161So it's really just not that convenient.
162Not really worth it in my opinion.
163But here it's like totally different.
164It's like a new world.
165So those are the major changes that I've noticed in myself since coming to China.
166It hasn't even been that long in the grand scheme of things.
167I'm sure the longer that I stay here, the more I will change.
168And maybe in the future, looking back at this video, I will be able to see just how much I have changed.
169And that's something I'm looking forward to.
170I love changing and I love growing.
171I also want to say that this is all based off of my experience.
172I'm sure that, you know, depending on where you come from, depending on who you are and what kind of lifestyle you have,我敢肯定,你知道, 取决于你来自哪里, 取决于你是谁 和你有什么样的生活方式,
173or even which city you go to in China, the experience would be totally different.
174So when I talk about things I notice or cultural differences, you know, they're all based off of my experience.
175I can't really generalize for anyone else.
176I have moved around a lot as an adult.
177I've moved around America, moved around to a lot of different cities.
178And, you know, now I'm in China, a totally different country.
179And I think personally, I've always just liked to change up my surroundings.
180Even when I was a little kid, I would always rearrange my bedroom.
181And my room when I was growing up was really, really, really tiny.
182Basically only fit a bed and maybe a dresser or a few other things.
183But still, I would just maybe once a month rearrange all the furniture, change up my bed and, you know,不过,我也许每个月 重新整理一下家具, 换上我的床,你知道,
184put something new on the walls or something like that.
185And after doing so, I always felt kind of refreshed.
186I felt the sense of motivation.
187I felt more productive.
188I felt like I could do something creative now that my surroundings were different.
189So now as an adult, I really love changing my surroundings.
190You know, it doesn't have to be something crazy.
191It could be rearranging your furniture.
192It could be moving to a new apartment complex, moving to a new city.
193In my case, it's really extreme that I moved to a new country.
194But I think it's all worth it for me because when you go somewhere new, when you change up your surroundings,
195it kind of gives you a chance to meet different people.
196It gives you a chance to see things you've never seen before.
197You know, even if you just go to a new neighborhood or you go to a new coffee shop,
198you know, you might suddenly have this spark in your mind.
199You know, you suddenly have something new you want to work on or a new idea.
200And those things would have never came to you if you didn't take the step and go somewhere unfamiliar.
201I personally don't even like having the same daily routine.
202I don't like doing the same things over and over every day.
203That feels really monotonous and boring to me.
204And I just like to switch things up.
205Maybe I'll change the order of the things that I do day to day.
206I think I just like this sense of possibility in life.
207I like feeling that I can start over at any point of time.
208I like feeling that I can control my future and I can find new opportunities
209rather than feeling stuck in a place where I don't want to be.
210Anyways, that's going to be it for today's episode.
